Good for Mitt Romney for standing up for his faith and pushing back the bigotry he’s been facing in the Republican primary. It’s too bad he turned around and attacked the pluralism (he called it “secularism”) that he seemed to initially advocate. See the full remarks here.
I was surprised that a lot of the coverage gave the impression that vague “politics” or “Christians” were the source of the problem for Romney’s campaign. Actually, the problem for Romney comes from a much narrower subset. It’s Republican primary voters, specifically some evangelicals. True, there is broader bias against Mormons in many segments of American society, but I doubt that Romney would have had to make that speech if he was running in the Democratic primary.
